The fact that I’m writing this at the end of August instead of mid-year should tell you a thing or two about how my 20 before 2020 bucket list is going. This summer has really gotten away from me, and I’m one hundred percent blaming the weather. I don’t think I’m wrong to say that this has been the grossest summer I’ve ever experienced in Edmonton. Seriously, it sucks. I love this city and will stand up for it any day but I. Am. Struggling. Summers in Edmonton are usually spectacular. Mid to high twenties, sun almost every day and the odd thunderstorm.

So, what I’m trying to say is that you should cut me some slack when it comes to the outdoorsy stuff on this list.
1. COMMIT TO (ALMOST) DAILY WRITING
I really wish this wasn’t number one. It hasn’t gone great. I haven’t written every day, and I also haven’t built up a backlog of posts. I don’t know why I struggle with this so much but I do. I’ll keep trying!
2. 3 MILLION STEPS IN 2019
This one has been going pretty well. I fell behind during the winter months but have been killing it this summer. In July I did 350,000 steps. I’m still slightly behind the pace to hit 3 million by the end of the year, but I hope I can keep getting high numbers well into the fall to make up for it.
3. COMPLETE A 30 DAY YOGA CHALLENGE
A win! I completed this in January and February and am thinking I’ll do it again this Fall. It’s incredible how much better I feel when I fit in even twenty minutes of yoga a day.
4. MAKE EATING OUT AN EVENT
I’ll give myself maybe a C on this one. A passing grade but not perfect execution. This might be the one category where the crappy weather has helped. I’m a lot less tempted to leave the house when it’s pouring rain.
5. READ 45 BOOKS
This one is also going well. I’m currently at 31 books finished and shouldn’t have a problem hitting 45 by the end of the year. I have decided that I’m not going to set a reading goal next year. The reason I can hit this number is because of listening to audiobooks when I walk to work, and I’ve realized they are not my thing. Nothing against audiobooks, but I feel pressure to only listen to books because of my reading challenge, and I’d like to catch up on podcasts and listen to more music instead.
6. TAKE BREE ON A ROAD TRIP
Other than a couple of day trips, we haven’t done a real trip with Bree yet. I’m on it though! We’re booked to go to Banff the first weekend in October, and she’s tagging along. Fingers crossed for half-decent weather, which at this point means no snow.
I completely forgot I put this on my bucket list (bad human!) so it hasn’t happened yet. It will though. There is no shortage of volunteer opportunities around Edmonton, so I need to look into it and find one that’s a good fit.
8. GET A MASSAGE ONCE A MONTH
Yup! Full disclosure, this was not much of a challenge.
9. DONATE BLOOD
Another yes! The bf and I went to donate blood last month for the first time. I was, of course, the person who almost passed out so I wouldn’t say I’m super motivated to go back, but I did it.
10. MAKE GREENER CHOICES
I’m going to give myself a B on this one. We’ve been doing pretty good about not driving, I’ve made an effort to limit the amount of plastic I buy, the bf is still composting, and our garden has been keeping us stocked with a good amount of fresh veggies. We’ve also hardly had to water at all because of all the rain.
And I’m currently writing this with a cup of tea and a blanket because it’s freezing, but I refuse to turn the heat on in August. Have I mentioned how terrible the weather is?!
11. GO TO FINCON 2019 IN WASHINGTON DC
Two. More. Weeks. I’m so freaking excited! Flights are booked, the hotel is arranged, and I have a million people I’m dying to meet. If you’re going to be there then please, please, please come say hi!
12. BIKE 500 KMS
Mega fail. Biking has been so inconsistent this summer that I even stopped tracking. I’ve still biked a bit but not anywhere close to how much I did last year.
13. ACTUALLY USE OUR COOKBOOKS!
I went on a big meal planning kick in the winter and went through all our cookbooks to pick out recipes. There were some winners we still use, but I should do it again. I find we use recipes way less in the summer because we tend to throw something on the bbq and serve it up with a salad from the garden. We’re way more into planned meals in the fall/winter.
14. BE MORE FOCUSED
This was a weird one because I’m not sure how to grade myself. Right now I’m writing this post sitting at the dining room table with no TV or cats around. Which is concerning; the cats are definitely doing something shitty. I’m still not great about putting my phone down when we’re watching TV. Unless it’s Fleabag or Killing Eve because those shows are AMAZING.
15. RENOVATE THE BATHROOM
Yes, yes, yes! And I love it. When we moved in the bathroom was a dark purple with a disgusting old toilet and totally impractical pedestal sink. We need storage badly so got a new vanity with cupboard and drawer space. We put up beadboard wallpaper and a chair rail, installed a new toilet and shower door and got gold fixtures. It’s now a white and gold paradise.
I absolutely recommend the wallpaper. Sounds sketchy but it’s easy to use, and you paint over it so it looks way better than you’d expect.
16. EAT SMOKED MEAT IN MONTREAL
More than once. In February we went to Montreal to watch the Oilers play (an annual tradition with my work), and we went for smoked meat at Schwartz’s and Reuben’s. Reuben’s was the hands-down winner for me.
17. TURN INTERNET FRIENDS INTO REAL LIFE FRIENDS
This might be the biggest win of the bucket list so far, and FinCon hasn’t even happened yet. Earlier this year I went to watch the World Curling Championships in Lethbridge with an internet turned real-life friend, I met up with Bethany and Charles from His and Her FI in Portland, stayed with Angela from Tread Lightly Retire Early in Seattle and hung out with A Purple Life and Felicity on the same trip. This is a trend I’m hoping to keep going!
18. GROW A BETTER GARDEN
Better might be pushing it, but we had good luck with our vegetable garden this year. The rain has helped. We’ve been eating fresh peas, tomatoes, lettuce, kale, beets, and carrots. This year was a year of figuring things out in our new house, and there is some room for improvement. The raised bed we used for veggies is falling apart, so that is going to get replaced next year with two smaller beds that are more accessible. We will also be redoing the front flower bed. I wanted to let it grow and see what came up this year, but it’s a bit of a disaster. There are a lot of flowers, but they’re overgrown and not well laid out, so we’re starting fresh for a little more curb appeal.
19. COMPLETE A ONE MONTH SHOPPING BAN
I’ll have to get back to you on this one. It hasn’t happened, and if I’m honest, it probably won’t. I might incorporate a make-shift shopping ban in October/November, but there are a few things in the calendar that will make it a challenge. I do think it’s a good idea as a way to refresh my spending habits, which always get a little loose during the summer.
20. WEAR EVERYTHING I OWN
I’m at a good place with my wardrobe right now. I did a big purge earlier this summer and got rid of most of the things I don’t wear. There are still a few dresses I hung on to for special occasions, but other than that I’m happy with everything in there. Overall I’m doing better than I was expecting. There are a few things that have been total duds (biking) but the majority of items I’ve either accomplished or should accomplish by the end of the year. How are your 2019 goals going? Have you done everything you wanted to do?
